According to the studies, about 200 million people of the world's population are affected by diabetes mellitus. Diabetes Mellitus, or diabetes as it is often referred to, is a chronic disorder in which the body is unable to control blood sugar or glucose levels. In other words, this is a condition that results in high blood sugar level due to the body's incapability to produce enough insulin - a hormone that is secreted by pancreas and indispensable for the body cells to take up glucose in order to convert them into energy.

Types of Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus includes three types such as:

Type 1 Diabetes - This is a kind of autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the body mistakenly attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. As a result, the pancreas secrete very little or no insulin at all. In fact, it becomes necessary for a person with type 1 diabetes to take insulin daily. Even though it can affect people of any age, type 1 diabetes is most common in children as well as young adults. Its symptoms include:

  • Increased thirst and hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision

If not diagnosed at an early stage, type 1 diabetes can be life-threatening and may sometimes lead to a condition namely diabetic ketoacidosis.

Type 2 Diabetes - In contrast to type 1 diabetes, this type diabetes may produce enough insulin however characterized by a condition known as insulin resistance, in which body cannot use insulin properly due to some unknown reasons. Over the time, the insulin produced by pancreas may decrease. Type 2 diabetes is regarded as the most common type of diabetes, and some of the factors that affect it are obesity, ethnicity, and family history of diabetes. The symptoms and signs of type 2 diabetes usually develop over time, and include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Slow healing of cuts and wounds
  • Frequent infection
  • Nausea

Gestational Diabetes - This type of diabetes usually occurs during pregnancy. The studies reveal a woman with a history of gestational history has a 25% to 50% chance of developing type II diabetes in later years.
