The holiday season is upon us which means trouble for those of us with Diabetes.  Weight loss is often suggested as a method to help keep blood glucose levels under control.  But let’s face it; it’s difficult to keep your weight down during the holidays.  People often gain weight during the period from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.  The average weight gain during this period is twelve pounds, and that additional weight gain can wreak havoc with your blood glucose levels.  There are a number of easy strategies you can employ to help keep you from gaining weight during this time frame.

  1. Limit alcohol consumption.  Alcohol is highly caloric.  An easy way to reduce those calories is to limit the alcohol you consume.  If you are drinking wine, you can switch to wine spritzers (half a glass of wine, half a glass of club soda).  Another strategy would be to alternate a glass of water with each alcoholic beverage.  This has the added advantage of keeping your blood alcohol levels low.
  2. Socialize more at parties.  If you are “working the room” you will wind up talking more and eating less.  Who knows, you may even spark a new friendship in the process.
  3. Plan ahead.  If you know the hosts of the party/parties you are attending find out what will be served so you can think about where you want to splurge.  You may want to skip the rolls if you know that your all-time favorite dessert is being served, this way you can have that special dessert without the guilt.
  4. Scan the buffet.  If you haven’t had the option to plan ahead, take a look at everything you are being served before loading your plate.  Then choose the foods that will really satisfy you.
  5. Make smart choices.  While you shouldn’t pass up on your favorites, don’t load up on everything, and don’t skip the salad and the veggies!
  6. There’s always tomorrow.  The holiday season is a stretch of time.  You don’t have to eat the pecan pie, the pumpkin pie and the cheesecake at one sitting.  You
  7. Don’t forget to exercise.  If you can fit your regular workout in, great.  If you can’t because of social obligations, try to get some exercise in anyway.  The easiest thing to do is to add extra steps: park further from your destination, or walk if you can.

If you have diabetes, weight loss during the holidays may be difficult to achieve.  But by exercising a bit of restraint you can certainly keep your weight gain down, and that can be a goal worth pursuing.
